BREAKING: At least 21 killed after train derailment in Cordoba

At least 21 people have been confirmed dead and more than 100 injured after two high-speed trains derailed near Adamuz in Córdoba on Sunday evening.

An Iryo service travelling from Málaga to Madrid derailed at around 7:45 pm and crossed onto the adjacent track, colliding with a second train bound for Huelva.

Late last night it was confirmed that at least 21 people had died, with well over 100 passengers injured, including at least 25 seriously, while a number of people were initially reported trapped as rescue operations continued.

High-speed rail services between Madrid and Córdoba, Seville, Málaga, and Huelva have been suspended, with thousands of passengers stranded whilst the high-speed line remains closed.

Services are expected to remain suspended for most of Monday.

Regional authorities have deployed intensive care units and critical support teams to the scene, with hospitals in the region activating their emergency protocols.

Last night the Royal Family sent their condolences to the victims of the crash, whilst Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said the full resources of the Government are available in the region.

He is also expected to visit the scene of the crash later today.

Investigations into the cause of the derailment are under way, with national and regional leaders expressing condolences and support for victims and families.
